Changing State Graduation Requirements

Starting with the Class of 2021, the state of Colorado is implementing new graduation guidelines. In addition to WCA’s credit requirements, all students must also meet one minimum benchmark in English and math using a variety of measures.

The guidelines have two purposes, the first is to articulate Colorado’s shared beliefs about the value and meaning of a high school diploma. The second is to outline the minimum components, expectations, and responsibilities of local districts and the state to support students in attaining their high school diploma. Life beyond high school is different from what it used to be. Most jobs in Colorado now, and in the future, require training or education beyond high school. Students who graduate and work in Colorado will need in-demand skills that meet business, industry, and higher education standards.

The majority of our students will meet this benchmark through their Next Generation Accuplacer or SAT score or by passing ENG 121 and MAT 121 with a C or higher. We are tracking how students are progressing on meeting these guidelines and will contact students and parents if we have concerns about a student not meeting one of these measures.
